Faulty batches of epileptic drugs distributed in Australia

AUSTRALIA:  According to media reports, numerous batches of faulty lamotrigine tablets have been sent out to the market, and consumed by users, who have exhibited signs of serious side effects as a result of the drugs.

Lamotrigine is an anticonvulsant drug, usually prescribed to patients suffering from Bipolar disorder or Epilepsy. Experts believe that certain variables may have been mismanaged during the manufacturing process.

A study, published in Australian Psychiatry, used mass spectrometry, to comprehend the chemical or structural anomalies in the six compositions of drugs as well as the two generic compositions consumed by the patients. While the results were comparable and showed no significant anomalies, the drugs consumed by the patients expressed deviations in the concentrations of lamotrigine.

Of the two patients that experienced side effects, one experienced spots, lumps, and blisters, while the other experienced hot flashes, breathing issues, chest pain, and nausea.

According to the researchers that studied Lamotrigine "It’s possible that while being transported to Australia, they might be exposed to excessive heat or cold and may break down. But we suspect there are some manufacturing sites where the product is being compromised or contaminated after receiving approval”.
