Formula vs Breastfeeding: Busting Myths

A question that pops up in every new mother’s mind is whether they should opt for formula or breast milk for their newborn. Both of these options have their ups and downs and everybody has their preferences as well. Unfortunately, there are many myths circulating about the issue which makes it hard to make an informed decision. We have compiled some of these to give you the information you require to choose what is best for you and your child.

●      Myth: Formula is just as good as breast milk

Breast milk is ideal for your baby’s needs. It is full of healthy nutrients, antibodies, anti-viruses, and anti-allergens which help boost your infant’s immune system. Babies also have an easier time digesting breast milk as compared to formula, resulting in less spitting up and gas. Moreover, breast milk is cheaper in the long run and you always have a fresh supply for the child anytime, everywhere. Health care professionals globally recommend breast milk over formula, especially for the first six months.

●      Myth: You will know on the first day if breastfeeding works for you

Like everything else in life, breastfeeding also takes practice. Early on in the process, you may face challenges, but that is completely okay. It takes time for you and your child to understand each other and see what works best for both. If it gets too much at times, lean on your community of friends and family to get through it.

●      Myth: Breastfeeding is painful

Your breasts and nipples may feel sore and tender at the start, but that is common. After that, breastfeeding should not be painful. If it is, try consulting a lactation specialist who can guide you on how to go about the proper positioning and latching techniques.

●      Myth: You cannot breastfeed if your breast or nipples are not the perfect shape or size

Every woman has their unique set of breasts; there is no “perfect” type. Breasts of all types can make sufficient milk. Your baby can feed successfully regardless of its physical appearance, given you are following the proper techniques. Also, another factor to consider is that every baby has different anatomical features, like their mouth, lips, and tongue. A good breastfeeding experience depends on the anatomical compatibility between the mother and baby.

●      Myth: Babies who start taking formula milk do not go back to breastfeeding

Each baby is unique and their habits will vary. In most cases, infants may switch between formula and breast milk without a problem. However, some may not be able to have a smooth transition. If you are having difficulties, then consult a professional for guidance.

●      Myth: You cannot take medications while breastfeeding

A lot of medications are completely safe to be taken during breastfeeding. However, you should always check the medicinal instructions carefully. In case of any doubt, check in with your doctor or pharmacist while making them aware of your breastfeeding.
