PM Shahbaz Sharif to start anti-polio drive across Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: PM Shahbaz Sharif delivered polio drops to youngsters in Islamabad to start a nationwide anti-polio campaign.

The anti-polio effort was initiated after three new cases of the devastating disease were reported in the country.

The Shehbaz Sharif, Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan emphasised the necessity for all stakeholders, including federal agencies, provincial governments, and international organisations, to work together to eradicate the illness from the country.

PM Shahbaz Sharif chaired a meeting of the National Task Force on polio eradication. 

The Prime Minister of Pakistan stated that polio remained a threat. He guaranteed the provinces of the federal government's complete assistance and cooperation.

He expressed appreciation that foreign organisations, such as the World Health Organization (WHO), the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and others, provided technical and financial support for the anti-polio effort.


In April and May of this year, three polio cases were reported from North Waziristan, and the meeting was informed. 


It is important to note that no polio cases were reported between February 2021 and March 2022. (14 months).


Currently, 25 districts in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are at high risk for the transmission of the poliovirus, it was noted.


Shahbaz Sharif, Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, asked all provincial governments to give the anti-polio effort their full attention. He anticipated that engagement with international partners would continue in order to eradicate polio from the country entirely.
