Journalist Ayaz Amir arrested in daughter-in-law’s murder case, husband tampers with evidence

Islamabad: Son of Senior Journalist Ayaz Amir, Mr Shahnawaz Amir has been accused of the murder of his wife Sara Inam, on 23rd of September 2022. It is alleged that Ms Sara was struck on the head with a gym dumbbell, by her husband, during her visit to Islamabad.

While the police pursue the ongoing investigation of the Canadian national, Sara Inam, they took into custody, her husband, Shahnawaz Amir, for his alleged involvement in the crime.

On Saturday, the victim’s husband, Mr Shahnawaz Amir was presented before the judge. The police have obtained a 2-day physical remand for the suspect.

However, at the hearing today, both the Senior Journalist, Ayaz Amir, and his son were present, during which Mr Ayaz said that he had informed the Islamabad Police of the murder and had also provided the police with the address of the farmhouse, located in the Shanawaz Town locality of the Federal capital, where the incident took place.

However, the police claimed that Mr Ayaz had withdrawn certain information from the victim at the time of her wedding to the journalist’s son. The fact that the victim was unaware of her husband’s addiction to drugs, was brought up during the hearing today.

The police then requested a two-day physical remand for the journalist which was granted by the judge. On this stance, Mr Ayaz expressed his disappointment claiming he had informed the police of the details of the incident. He said “Shahnawaz is a suspect, he is addicted to drugs and I have no sympathies for him”

The incident

Probing further into the case revealed details of the incident. According to sources, when the police arrived at the farmhouse, they were received by the suspect’s mother who had informed the police that her son had murdered his wife during an argument. She also said that her son had hidden the body post the murder.

During the police’s search of the farmhouse, they found the suspect, Mr Shahnawaz Amir, with blood stained hands, cleaning the remaining blood off the floor. The suspect had hid the body of the victim in the bathtub and the murder weapon, was found hidden under the bed. Mr Shahnawaz confirmed his identity at the time of his arrest.

It was also reported that around 6 mobile phones were found at the location of the incident, out of which 5 belonged to the suspect, and one belonged to the victim. However, in the attempt to erase evidence, Mr Shahnawaz had used the murder weapon to smash 2 phones, one belonging to him and one belonging to the victim.

In the first information report, Mr Shahnawaz admitted to committing the crime, the murder weapon was found hidden under the bed. The body of the victim was also sent to the polyclinic for an autopsy, and the clothes were sent to forensics.

In the attempt to tamper with evidence Mr Shahnawaz was then not only arrested but given a two-day physical remand. The investigation is still ongoing until further evidence is unveiled.
