Liver Transplant Center established at Dow University

KARACHI- Dow University has established a full-fledged Liver Transplant Center and in the end of March 2015, it will start functioning. This Liver Transplant Centre would be a part of DUHS Research City Project, with provision for other health care institutes. These views were expressed by Governor Sindh & Chancellor, DUHS, Dr Ishrat ul Ebad Khan while addressing the Inaugural Ceremony of Bariatric Surgery Center, recently, at Governor House, Karachi.

Prof. Masood Hameed Khan, Vice Chancellor, DUHS and Prof. Muhammad Jawaid, Director, Bariatric Surgery Center besides senior faculty members of the university were also present on the occasion.

He further said that; Obesity is becoming a major health problem worldwide and has reached  epidemic proportions. Evidence continues to accumulate that obesity is a major risk factor for many diseases and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Bariatric surgery is currently the only modality that provides a significant, sustained weight loss for the patient who is morbidly obese, with resultant improvement in obesity-related co-morbidities. Dow University for the first time in the public sector, has established a Bariatric Surgery Center to offer weight reduction programs including surgical options for Bariatric Surgery.           

He further acknowledged the Philanthropic efforts of Dr. Faiz-ur-Rahman who has donated his valuable personal property, located in thickly populated area of Karachi, where these health care services are much needed. In the building donated by him, the Dow University will extend these health care services, including all possible diagnostic facilities, helping people of that area. Similar services are already being provided by Dow University at its Ojha campus, where thousands of people are benefitting.

Prof Masood Hameed Khan, Vice-Chancellor-DUHS evaluated the progress of the University since its inception. He also highlighted the developments of the University. The University since its inception has been aiming to provide maximum possible health services to the community through various ways.

Prof. Dr. Muhammad Jawaid said that; According to a fair estimate, 1.5 billion people are obese worldwide. Obesity is a health issue that has attracted concern, only in the past few years. Bariatric Surgery Centre, Dow University of Health Sciences has started Bariatric Surgery which is the most recent and advance surgery, besides sleeve gastrectomy, which is a very safe and effective procedure for losing weight. The services are being provided in the developed countries (UK & USA etc). These services will be provided at a highly economical cost in this public center. 

Up till now, the University has operated 20 cases which left negligible scars. The patient started reducing their weight and there were no complications. The patients are enjoying their life once again, gradually losing body weight. Bariatric Surgeons are following our patients, initially every week, then monthly for counseling, to ensure light and low caloric diet with advice of some daily physical activity.

Earlier, Dr. Faiz-ur-Rahman also spoke on the occasion. Later on, Prof. Masood Hameed Khan presented DUHS memento to Dr. Ishrat ul Ebad Khan.
