9 newborns die in a Karachi hospital – Violent protest by Parents.

Karachi: During a tragic crisis, created due to alleged criminal negligence at a private hospital in Korangi , 9 newborn babies placed in incubators and ventilators have died today, due to reasons unknown so far. The infant deaths have continued to occur over the past several hours, while the fatal tragedy has triggered violent protests carried out by the parents of the dying babies. The aggrieved parents have destroyed several equipment, furniture and fixtures in and around the hospital. The Korangi crossing has been totally blocked for traffic, by the protesters, who are demanding the immediate arrest of the Doctors and other responsible persons. However, so far the police have not made any arrests.

There have been accusations, that the newborn babies were kept in the nursery without any qualified staff to monitor their health for many hours. Some of the parents complained that some janitorial staff members of the hospital were also seen administering injections to the infants.

The Governer of Sindh – Dr. Ishrat ul Ibad Khan has taken serious notice of the alarming situation, and has constituted a 3 member inquiry-committee to investigate the real causes behind the deaths. The committee has been ordered to urgently submit a detailed report on the incidence to the EDO Health Department, by 9 O Clock tonight.

The Chief Minister Sindh has also asked the Secretary health Government of Sindh to present a report on this gruesome negligence, and to scrutinize the hospitals legal status and license.
