KARACHI - The College of Family Medicine Pakistan (CFMP), Karachi, has demanded proportionate representation of general practitioners and family physicians in Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC).

Quoting the PMDC’s statistics, a press release of the CFMP said that over 1,45,000 general practitioners and around 32,000 specialists are registered in Pakistan.

The CFMP deplored that although family physicians/general practitioners single-handedly provide affordable and cost-effective healthcare facilities to majority of Pakistanis and often remain exposed to occupational hazards such as contracting diseases and infections, they are grossly under-represented in all forums, including the PMDC.

“The CFMP being a representative body of general practitioners in the country must be given adequate representation in the PMDC,” the press release said, adding that the mission of College of Family Medicine is to improve quality of healthcare in Pakistan.
