Dow University started producing PhDs

KARACHI, November 2013: Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) has started its first PhD Defence Thesis Examination and with this has now started producing PhDs.

Dr. Jahan Ara Ainuddin from Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, DUHS was the PhD candidate. Her thesis was approved by subject expert from outside Pakistan and she was awarded the first PhD degree from Dow University. She completed her PhD under the supervision of Prof. Nasim Karim, Professor & HOD, Department of Pharmacology, Bahria University Medical & Dental College, with co-supervision of Prof. Dr. Muhammad Zaman Shaikh, Ex‐ Director, NIDE & Professor of Medicine. The panel of external examiners including Prof. Rashid Latif, Hameed Latif Hospital Lahore, Prof. Dr. Abdul Jabbar, Professor of Medicine & Consultant Endocrinologist, Sr. Medical Advisor, Dubai, Prof. Dr. Munawar Alam Ansari, Department of Pharmacology, Liaquat University of Medical & Health Sciences, Jamshoro‐Sindh and two internal examiners, Prof. Dr. Salahuddin Afsar, Dean, Faculty of Medical & Allied Sciences, Department of Medicine and Prof. Dr. Ayesha Khan, Professor & Chairperson, Department of Gyne & Obstetrics.

An Open Defence Session was held on 21st November 2013 at Dow International Medical College, Ojha Campus. Prof. Dr. Masood Hameed Khan, Vice-Chancellor, DUHS stated a brief history of successes of the university under his leadership. He informed that the Research output at the time of inception of DUHS was 42 and now it has been increased about 4 times, to approximately 150. He appraised the efforts of the Research Department and also encouraged the faculty to go ahead and carry on their researches because the university is a place where knowledge is created and it also provides the platform for researchers.

Prof. Junaid Ashraf, Principle, Dow Medical College in his address gave a detailed process of examination and postgraduate activities at the Dow University. He congratulated Dr. Jahan Ara Ainuddin on becoming the first PhD Candidate of Dow University.

Prof. Dr. Nazeer Khan gave a brief introduction of Research Activities and PhD program running at DUHS. Later Prof. M. Umar Farooq, Pro-Vice Chancellor, DUHS shared his feelings at this remarkable achievement of the university and also expressed their best wishes to Dr. Jahan Ara Ainuddin.

Later on, Dr. Jahan Ara Ainuddin started her presentation. After her oral presentation, the examination was conducted in front of audience where examiners asked the questions and Dr. Jahan Ara Ainuddin answered them. Afterwards, one of the external examiners Prof. Rashid Latif announced the result.
