Laundry service at JPMC

Karachi: Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center (JPMC) administration has suspended three employees (washer men) and issued show-causes notices against their alleged involvement in running the heavy dry cleaning machinery for commercial basis in government’s servant quarters.

Sources at JPMC on condition of anonymity said some washer men of institution has illegally installed heavy  dry cleaning machinery with the consent of high-ups of healthcare few years ago and since then they were providing laundry services to residents of Saddar, Bazarta Line and nearby private hotels on commercial basis. They were running their laundry business with hospital electricity, gas and water since long.

They said these employees are working in JPMC’s Laundry Department since long. They constructed illegal homes in the premises of hospital and started their laundry business on commercial basis in institution in evening hours, he explained.

   
They informed that  these washer men have also been providing free of cost laundry services to doctor, paramedical staff and nurse’s families, therefore no one dared to stop illegal activities of these employees in past. The washer men also installed heavy air-conditioners at their homes and using hospital electricity for commercial and personal purposes.

The newly appointed JPMC administration had issued formal warning to these employees earlier but they continued their illegal activities. The hospital management has now suspended three washer men and issued show-cause notices to them. The administration also instructed these employees to evacuate their servant quarters as soon as possible.

      
Deputy Director Admin & Focal Person JPMC Dr Jawaid Jamali said three employees has been suspended over running heavy laundry machines on commercial basis. He said administration also issued show-cause notices and also registered FIR against them.

He said these employees are running the laundry business in illegally constructed homes in the premises of hospital since last six years. He informed administration will form inquiry committee after receiving reply from these employees.
