MS of Abbasi Shaheed Hospital suspended

KARACHI: The Medical Superintendent of Abbasi Shaheed Hospital - Dr Nadeem Rajput was recently suspended, along with 4 other doctors on charges of professional negligence. The recent death of a male patient, suspectedly after being given wrong injections, at the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, has led to the suspension of these doctors. To replace the suspended MS at the hospital, Dr. Najam-ul-Haq has now been appointed as the new MS of Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.

A four-member enquiry committee has been formed to investigate the matter. Dr. Waqar Kazmi will be heading this investigative committee's tasks.

According to reports; A man died at the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, due to the alleged negligence of doctors. Responding to this fatal error, the family of the deceased patient got angry and vandalized the hospital. The victim’s family members alleged that the patient was given a wrong injection.

The unfortunate victim of the incident was named Shakeel Ahmed - a resident of Baldia Town, who was admitted to the hospital for an appendix surgery. Sources said.

After the patient's death, his relatives and friends protested and complained that; The patient was not attended properly by the doctors, and a wrong injection was administered due to negligence, which caused his death. Reports stated that; Later the family members started rioting in the hospital’s premises and caused damage to the infrastructure. They also damaged several vehicles parked in the vicinity. Several doctors and paramedical staff were beaten up by the protesters.

Following the violence; the doctors and paramedical staff vacated the hospital premises. Hence, the MS of the hospital along with four other doctors were suspended from Abbasi Shaheed Hospital and a police case was lodged against the violent protestors who damaged valuable equipment and assets of the hospital.

The Karachi Administrator - Rauf Akhtar Farooqui expressed his concern on the occasion and stated that; “An inquiry has been initiated. This is the first time that a patient has died, at the hospital due to negligence of the doctors, and the people have responded by attacking the staff and hospital. Such occurences are totally unacceptable".
