Over 40 dietitians attend workshop at SIUT

KARACHI- Over 40 people, mostly dietitians, attended a workshop held here under the aegis of Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation’s (SIUT) Nutrition & Dietetics Department. Two of the participants were from Peshawar.  General Secretary of PNDS, Lt. Cdr. Rabia Anwar, highlighted the importance and role of dietetics in health care.

Clinical dietician Mrs Noor Zehra Bilal discussed the importance of nutritional assessment in terms of hospital care.  Miss Nusrat Akbar, Consultant Dietician at TIH, delivered lecture on Enteral Nutrition (EN) support along with latest guidelines and how to combat its complications.

In-charge Clinical Dietitian, SIUT, Mrs Kehkashan Zehra Hossain, shed light on Parenteral Nutrition (PN) support. She explained how to prescribe PN order and discussed its practical considerations.

CHK’s Burns Centre’s assistant professor Ehmar-al-Ibran delivered a lecture on comparison of single bottle vs. compounded parenteral nutrition solutions.

SIUT’s Pharmacy manager Ms Sidra Khan discussed the role of pharmacist in developing PN order and electrolyte management.

Hands-on activities on Enteral and Parenteral nutrition prescriptions were conducted by facilitators - Mrs Hina Afnan, Consultant Dietitian at DUHS; Mrs Samia Samar, Clinical Dietitian-I SIUT and Ms Tabassum Zehra, Clinical Dietitian at SIUT.

Later, dietitians shared their clinical experiences at an interactive session.

In second half of the workshop, two case studies were presented by SIUT’s senior Clinical Dietitian Ms Sabeen Siddiqui. She discussed the management of these cases, using the latest guidelines of enteral and parenteral nutrition support.

Speaking at the concluding session of the workshop, the SIUT’s director, Prof Adeeb ul Hassan Rizvi, acknowledged the role of dietetics in health care, declaring dietitians as “scientists dealing in food and Nutrition”.

Later, participants of the workshop were awarded certificates by SIUT’s Urologist Prof Zafar Hussain and Nephrologist Prof Fazal Akhtar.
