Karachi: An emergent meeting of Pakistan Medical Association (Centre) held here at PMA House has unanimously demanded of Pakistan Medical and Dental Council’s (PMDC) election committee to reconsider its decision of holding election on Dec 5 as the local government polls are also scheduled to be held in various districts of Punjab and Sindh on the same day.
PMA (Centre) president Dr. Aziz Ahmed Lehri, president-elect Dr. M. Ashraf Nizami, Dr. Talha Sherwani and Dr. Bashir Ahmed Channa participated in the meeting through video link from Quetta, Lahore and Larkana, respectively, while it was attended, among others, by PMA Centre’s secretary general Dr. Mirza Ali Azhar, Dr. S.M. Qaisar Sajjad (Treasurer), Dr. M. Shaukat Ali Malik, Dr. Ahmed Bhimani, Dr.Naseer Baloch, Dr.Hamid Manzoor, Dr. Khalil Mukkadam, Dr. Abdul Ghafoor Shoro, Dr. Usman Ghani, Dr. Najum Feroz Mehmudi and senior members of the organization.
The meeting also urged the PMDC’s election committee to increase the number of polling stations from 11 districts to all the districts of the Punjab and include the prestigious institutions like King Edward Medical College/ Mayo Hospital, FJMC/ Ganga Ram Hospital, PGMI/Lahore General Hospital and Sheikh Zayed Hospital Lahore in the list of the polling stations to facilitate the democratic process of elections as at least 2,000 doctors are working in the aforesaid hospitals.
Moreover, with a view to facilitating voters of Sindh province, the number of polling stations in the interior of Sindh should also be increased to other districts of the province by setting up polling stations in every district hospital. Karachi despite being a city of over 20million people has only four polling stations although at least 10 polling stations should be set up in the metropolis at institutions such as Lyari General Hospital, Sindh Government Korangi Hospital, Qatar Hospital, Social Security Hospital, Landhi and Sindh Government Malir Hospital, the meeting further resolved.
