Karachi: Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has stopped salary of at least 227 employees of Karachi Institute of Heart Diseases (KIHD) as they have not been attending to their duties since long.

The employees whose salaries had been stopped also include 29 doctors.

Sources said that an inquiry ordered by KMC administrator Sajjad Husasin Abbassi had indicated that at least 227 employees, including 29 doctors, had not been attending to their duties for the past several years, yet the KIHD administration’s record showed otherwise.

The Karachi Institute of Heart Diseases is the city’s second largest health institution, specialising in treatment of patients with cardiac ailments.

Acting on the directives of KMC Administrator, senior director health Dr Salma Kauser has instructed the KIHD authorities to immediately stop salaries of all the `ghost’ employees. She also asked the KIHD administration to issue show-cause notices to all those employees who are absent from their duties since long.

According to sources, another list of `ghost’ employees, including paramedical staff, doctors and employees of different KMC hospitals’ administrative departments, was being prepared for taking necessary action.
