SIOVCS gets status of autonomous body

Karachi: Sindh health department has given status of an autonomous body to Sindh Institute of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences (SIOVCS), Hyderabad.

The director of Sindh Institute of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences (SIOVCS), Hyderabad, Prof Dr Khalid Talpur said that Sindh Assembly had passed a bill on March 8, 2013 for upgrading Liaquat University Eye Hospital’s Sindh Institute of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences.


He said that SIOVCS has now become an autonomous institute like Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT), National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) and National Institute of Child Health (NICH).

“In fact, SIOVCS is the first eye institute with visual sciences in public sector in the province,” he added. 


He said that an state-of-the-art Diagnostic Laboratory and OT Complex had been established in the Institute where three professors, three associate professors, six assistant professors and 12 medical officers are available to provide all kinds of eye treatment and conduct eye surgeries.     


He said that a research library had also been set up in the Institute to conduct research in the eye-related diseases.


According to a notification, doctors and representatives of different bodies nominated on the board of the Sindh Institute of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, Hyderabad, are: Dr Ghulam Rabbani Dahri, Dr Aziz Ahmed Qureshi, Dr Iqbal Haroon Memon Nominees, Prof Dr Sameen Afzal Junejo, Prof Dr Ashok Kumar Narsani, Syed Mehmood Nawaz Shah, MPA Jam Khan Shoro, PMA’s nominee Dr Muhammad Hussain Leghari, a representative of a non-governmental organization Akhundzada Asfandyar Khan and Dr Aijaz Khan Khanzada of Sindh health department.
